Anastasi Seafood has been owned and operated by the Anastasi family for 4 generations. It started out with our grandfather selling fish off of a cart that he pushed throughout the South Philadelphia Streets while he sang out to the neighbors about all of his fresh, live products. When he was able my grandparents opened one of the first fish markets on South 9th Street. In those days mostly all of the vendors lined along the streets. That is how the Italian Market started on the street of row homes. This was a hard life without the luxuries we take for granted today. The only heat provided for him was a barrel, a makeshift coal stove. My grandparents worked hard and provided well for their 8 children. Even during the depression, my family was able to put a goods meal on the table. His fish market was passed on to my father and in turn he passed the family business on to his children. My brother Salvatore, being the only son, took full control in the late 70s. Together we worked hard to bring our familys row-home-fish-market, to a modern business. We are proud, hard working people. Our family has been doing business in the Italian Market for five generations. Our great-grandfather, Thomas Anastasi, came over from Sicily at age 13. He traveled alone hoping for a better life. Thomas settled in the neighborhood that became known as the Italian Market. When he was able, at age 17, he sent home for his sweetheart. My great-grandparents raised their large family on 9th Street. As tradition requires, the business was passed down from one generation to another. My grandfather Salvatore, not being the oldest son, started out being a street vendor. He pulled his fish cart through the south Philadelphia Streets ringing out to his customers. When he was able he opened a fresh fish market which in turn passed to my father Thomas and now to my brother Salvatore. What has taken 4 generations is the modern facility we are in today. We are now at the southeast corner of 9th and Washington Avenue. We are situated in the heart of the Italian Market. The best way to describe our new location is to say its in the heart of the old world as well as in the new. Where we still vend on the pavement on the metal awnings and welcome our customers into our mini fish supermarket. In our new facility not only can pour customers choose from more than 100 fresh or live products daily, they can also dine in our intimate tastefully decorated restaurant and bar. We are open 7 days a week from 9am 9pm, and on weekends until 11pm. Our phone number is: 215-462-0550 and our fax number is: 215-468-4465. We hope to see you soon.
