For years my father had dreamed of opening his own ravioli store. A chef by profession, Joe Talluto had all the knowledge needed to start his business, not just knowledge, but a love and a passion for Italian cuisine. Lacking, however, was the financial resources necessary to make his dream become reality. In 1967, my father sold our house on Wheeler Street in Southwest Philadelphia and used that money to purchase the business first ravioli machine. My father was 60 years old, and at a time when most people his age were preparing for retirement, he set out to pursue his dream.
Soon after, Tallutos opened its first store in Southwest Philadelphia at 61st. and Elmwood Avenue. My family moved into the apartment above the store. As word spread of our homemade ravioli, friends and neighbors were drawn to our store. With a limited staff of immediate family, and especially my mother, we worked hard to keep up with demand. The transition from dream to reality was quickly underway.
As the years progressed, and as business grew, so did production. In 1981, TAIF, Incorporated (Tallutos Authentic Italian Foods) was formed and Tallutos acquired our first major manufacturing facility. What was once produced in our original storefront now expanded to a 7,500 square foot U.S.D.A. Certified factory at 29th and Ellsworth Avenue.
Today TAIF, Inc. manufactures in its current facility in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Located in West Norriton Industrial Park, our current facility is comprised of 27,000 square feet with U.S.D.A. approval and H.A.A.C.P. certification.
Currently Tallutos has four retail locations in the Philadelphia area; the original on 61st & Elmwood, 944 S. 9th. Street in the heart of the Italian Market, 530 Foundry Road in the West Norriton Industrial Park, and Bunker Hill Plaza in Washington Township, NJ.
